The Louisiana Department of Education last week rated three Iberville Parish schools as eligible for becoming demonstration schools for the Positive Behavioral Support (PBS) program aimed at improving discipline and learning.
In an assessment of quality standards, the department gave the Iberville Parish Optional Education Center, Dorseyville Elementary School and White Castle High School scores of at least 80 percent.
“All three schools made the mark,” Superintendent Edward P. Cancienne said. “We are extremely excited to have all three schools are seeing results. It all comes down to children being engaged in active learning and knowing how to eliminate behavior issues. I salute the team.”
This demonstrates an excellent proficiency in all three schools and says that our programs are serving students well, Dr. Cancienne said. He said the good evaluation means the PBS teams at all three schools can advance to the next level of training.
PBS teams at each parish school already received “universal” training from LSU and state department personnel on ways to develop positive expectations, teach the expectations to both staff and students and provide positive behavior supports. They also learned to keep data and use it to improve the program and the student results. This first level is intended to reaches about 80% of a school's population.
The secondary level aims to reach students in need, and the third level, to help those students with the most behavioral issues, usually 5-8 percent of a school population.
William Bujol, Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance, and Darcel Angelloz work closely with all parish schools to encourage participation and collect the data needed for success.
