St. John High hosted an Armadillo Baseball Tournament last weekend in Plaquemine and neighboring Plaquemine High’s summer Green Devils took part in the contests.

Host SJHS (Armadillo varsity A) and PHS took part in the above 16 age group brackets. Fountainbeau’s summer team won the older division portion of the tourney. St. John’s Armadillo A team placed third. PHS closed with a 1-2 record.

St. John managed to beat PHS in one tourney outing by a 6-3 score. Shea Ourso was the winning pitcher and hit a home run for the Armadillos. Jarian Jenkins overcame early control problems and settled down to put in a good pitching effort for the PHS club. Josh Randall did a good job closing for the PHS club on the mound, while Josh Falcon led the Green Devil offense with a two-run home run and a double.

SJHS veterans Mike Martinez and Kaleb Campesi hit well for the Armadillo A club throughout the tourney, according to Coach Heath Whittington.

PHS lost its tourney opener to Ascension CHS by a 15-0 score despite a triple and a single by first baseman Jarvin Hines. The PHS club also lost by a narrow 5-3 score to the ABC All-Stars of the Gonzales area. Randall, Elliot James, and Brennan Vaughn also had hits for the Green Devils in the tourney. Blake Landry and Devin Diamond turned in good efforts on the mound against the ABC team, according to Coach Cory Alleman.

The Armadillo B team (16 and under age group) lost the championship game of the younger age bracket of the tourney to Zachary by an 11-9 score. Chris Bordelon led the way for the B club in the loss.

The Armadillo C team won its second game of the season in tourney participation, beating the Lafayette Gators in the under 16 bracket. They lost their other two games.

This past weekend, Coach Chase Mancuso brought the Armadillo A team to Lafayette for a tourney, while Coach Whittington brought the Armadillo C team up to a city near Memphis to play in a southern area youth tournament. Teams from hosting Tennessee, St. Louis, and Atlanta, along with other regions took part in the tourney field.

PHS visited Brusly for a Metro game Tuesday (after article deadline) and played St. James yesterday away. They visit Christian Life Academy tomorrow (Friday) in Baton Rouge.
