Class 3-A top-ranked Plaquemine High’s Green Devils became the undisputed District 8-3A boys’ basketball champs for the year in a row and closed out its regular season with a brilliant 30-2 record Friday night with yet another easy league triumph, this time on the road over Livonia High by a 66-30 score.
The Green Devils entered this week awaiting notice on whom will be their first postseason opponent tomorrow (Friday) night at home.
PHS 66, LIVONIA 30: The Green Devils simply went through the motions of their amazing consistency throughout 8-3A games this season as they romped to their eighth-straight league victory without a loss Friday night at LHS.
PHS rolled up quarter margins of 12-7, 13-6, 15-9, and 26-8 to win on the road by 33 points.
The duo of junior post player Treveon Hawkins and senior forward Jeremy Jenkins paced the PHS offense in the easy victory. Both hit for 15 points. Korbin Scott added a third Green Devil in double figures as he netted 11 points.
Hawkins and Scott, both former veterans of nearby North Iberville High, are no strangers to playing in the Livonia High gym. The Wildcats, who are only a few miles up the road from Maringouin, were the NIHS Bears’ closest non-district, non-parish rivals down through the years before the Iberville school closed its doors before this school year began.
The senior duo of Adonis Major and Jeffrey Ricard both chipped in 8 points for the PHS cause, while big Rod Daniels came off the bench to add 5 points. Demarcus Veal added 4 markers, while Jarrain Jenkins came off the bench to net a pair.
No Livonia player scored in double figures as the Green Devils held yet another league foe under 10 points per quarter.
PHS 60, ST. JAMES 26: It was Senior Night early last week, but junior Treveon Hawkins came off the bench in the second quarter and led the Green Devils in scoring for the second-straight game and the locals turned a 20-10 first-quarter lead into even more of a rout.
PHS cranked up its defense early, forcing turnovers and quick baskets into a 10-0 lead. However, the locals hit a lull in their play and made a handful of mistakes, allowing the visiting district rivals back into the game for a few minutes of court time.
“We had a mental lapse and hurried things a bit too much after we jumped out to the early lead. I have to say the team settled down in the third period and the defensive dominated the rest of the game. We can get away with some lapses against a team like St. James, but that cannot happen once we get into the playoffs. Consistency, consistency: That is what I look for game after game. I know they are teenagers, and they slip off (in discipline) every once in a while, but it is my job to keep them focused,” noted Coach Denny Wright about his top-ranked Green Devils.
