Homeowners and businesses covered by the Bayou Goula Fire Department might see lower fire insurance rates because of a substantially improved rating, Parish President J. Mitchell Ourso Jr. reported last week.

The Property Insurance Association of Louisiana (PIAL) notified parish officials by letter Monday that the fire rating for the area has improved from a Class 10, the worst possible, to Class 6 for areas within seven “road miles” of a fire station and within 1,000 feet of a standard fire hydrant in the Bayou Goula area, which is Iberville Parish Fire District 8.

Ourso praised the word of White Castle Fire Chief Jim Landry and his department for stepping starting two years ago to help their colleagues in Bayou Goula to improve the fire rating.

“They told me they would do their best,” the parish president said. He said the people in the Bayou Goula area should be grateful for “what they have done in so short a time.”
