St. John High’s Eagles came up short of victory in their final boys’ basketball game of the season last Thursday when visiting Westbank and District 8-A rival Ascension CHS managed to survive a final quarter rally by the hosting locals and claimed a 50-48 victory.
The local Plaquemine boys jumped out to an early 11-2 start, but allowed ACHS to rally back for quarter advantages of 16-11 and 17-10 in the second and third periods. Determined not to lose on their home court in the final district and season hoop game, the Eagles battled back hard. SJHS shaved a point off the 3-point lead built by the Donaldsonville club, but it was not enough for victory.
Sophomore season scoring leader Da’vante Williams had one of his better offensive games in district play as he bagged 21 points to pace the SJHS attack. Nick Baldwin also put some offensive effort into the contest as he finished with 12 points. The duo of Mike Martinez and Case Randazzo tallied 6 points apiece, while Josh Johnson closed with 3 points.
Kolby Martinez and Myron Dominique tallied 11 apiece to lead the ACHS offense. Matt Pearce added 9 points, while Jesse Pizzolato netted 8 and Brandon Burns 7 points. Greg Carter rounded out the ACHS scoring with 4 points.
St. John finished league play with a 2-10 record. The Eagles won six games during the season, but got a late start to the campaign due to state football competition. ACHS closed with a 5-7 district mark.
