Neither Plaquemine High nor St. John High softball varsity coaches is taking summer Metro league competition extremely seriously.

Says PHS mentor Oakley Boudreaux: “We are allowing the girls to play in different positions this summer, using the games to relax and have fun on the diamond. We want them to become comrades and play well together.”

SJHS Coach Cricket Crockett had much the same attitude about summer softball: “We are playing five-hundred ball, I guess, I really am not keeping up with it that closely. We are playing upper classification teams like Plaquemine, Parkview Baptist, Brusly, and Port Allen. And we are playing a good False River Academy team too. We are getting some good competition and experience and having some fun with it.”

A number of returning starters are with both PHS and SJHS clubs this summer as well as some new varsity girls. Eight SJHS future ninth graders are up with the varsity softball team as well as a trio of talented eighth graders from the SJ Middle School.

PHS has future MSA West eighth grader Mallory Perrault and future sophomores Kaitlyn Delaune and Krislyn Domingue returning after their first varsity seasons as starters. Veterans are standout outfielders Amber Smith and Candice Tullier, infielder-catcher Blaise Devillier, and backup Kate Dixon to name a few.

Returning SJHS varsity Lady Eagles playing summer ball are Maddie Bahry, Kaycee Hudson, Jessie Brown, Taylor Landry, Katherine D’Albor, Kamryn Theriot, and Alexis Ledet. Fancesca Louviere, who did not play last spring, is returning for summer ball after starting as catcher two springs ago on the varsity.

Boudreaux said she has attended some games and coached, but that former PHS catcher and graduate a few ago, Jessica Simoneaux, has been coaching the team on a volunteer basis for a few summer contests.
