Seven girls from Plaquemine city softball teams notched honors from the area daily newspaper recently for their high school diamond talent.
Five girls from District 8-A champion St. John High and two girls from District 8-3A co-champion Plaquemine High garnered spots on the 2010 ADVOCATE All-Metro Class 3-A and Classes Below first or second team honors.
Notching first-team all-metro softball honors were Plaquemine High outfielder Amber Smith, SJHS pitcher Lauren Poirrier, SJHS second sacker Bailey Burleigh, and SJHS outfielder Maddie Bahry.
Second team honors went to PHS pitcher Mallory Perrault, SJHS catcher Jessie Brown, and SJHS third sacker Kaycee Hudson.
Smith, an underclassmen who returns next spring to the diamond, hit .610 to lead the Lady Green Devils to the 3-A state playoffs and a three-way finish for first in the 8-3A district with Livonia and Brusly.
Poirrier, a graduated senior, turned in a 20-6 record and a perfect mark in 8-A competition to go with 156 strikeouts. She also hit .539 as the SJHS girls won district and went deep into the state playoffs.
Burleigh, a graduated senior, hit .485 to lead the Lady Eagles to the state playoffs.
Bahry, who returns for her senior season next spring, also was a solid batter for the SJHS girls with a .383 average and provided good base running at the top of the order.
Perrault, only a seventh grader at the MSA West Academy and allowed to play for PHS, was both the pitching ace for the Lady Green Devils and one of the leading hitters on the team.
And the duo of Brown and Hudson, both from St. Gabriel, were standout first-year starters for the St. John softball club. Brown, only a ninth-grader, took over at catcher and was a slugging leader. Hudson, also an underclassman, took over at third base and was another hard-hitting key to the district-title chase.
Ascension CHS of nearby Donaldsonville, and runner-up in the District 8-A race to St. John, also placed a trio on the All-Metro first-team. Annie Ourso, whose dad Artie Ourso was a standout baseball/football player at White Castle High, notched utility player honors. She was joined on the first team by ACHS teammates Alayna Falcon at utility player and Nancy Guillot at utility.
Jada Cobbs of Brusly and Miranda Moore of Port Allen notched second team honors for neighboring West Baton Rouge Parish and 8-3A rival teams for PHS.
