Plaquemine High’s Green Devil boys won their 20th victory of the basketball season last Thursday by routing 4-A Lutcher High 52-21.

The win was the 19th in a row for Coach Denny Wright’s streaking Green Devils and boosted their season mark to 20-1 overall, one of the best in the state.

Prior to the home victory last week, PHS was tied for first in the La. Sportswriters Assn. State Class 3-A boys’ basketball poll with 25-0 Caldwell High. The closest other 3-A team in the area to net a top ten berth was as far away as Thibodaux with the Cardinals of E.D. White ranked seventh. Other than PHS, Abbeville, and Holy Cross the rest of the top-ranked 3-A teams are from north or central parts of the state.

The PHS boys opened their season with a victory over 3-A Broadmoor High, however they lost their next game to hosting 4-A Istrouma High early in November. From there they went on a 19-game win streak as they enter this week’s action. The streak includes tournament victories in Ruston and at home in the annual Green Devil Classic.

Coach Wright credits his solid junior varsity program for allowing this year’s PHS team to be so productive when only a handful of seniors returned after seeing only limited court time behind a senior-latent state semifinalist club last season.

This year’s club is similar in style to all of Wright’s previous hoop clubs. All are known for their defensive hustle, speed, and quickness. This year’s team is his tallest since coming to PHS with guard Demarcus Veal and forward Tre’veon Hawkins both over 6-4 and being joined by a handful of six-foot or better teammates.

Only a couple of years ago, 4-A Lutcher was a key district rival for PHS, but this year they were no match for the Green Devils. The 3-14 overall visitors were never in the game as PHS rolled up quarter margins of 13-6, 11-2, 12-6, and 16-7. Only one Lutcher player scored more than 4 points and was not in double figures as the Green Devil defense dominated the floor.

Veal paced the PHS offense in the 31-point win with 10 points, while Jeffrey Ricard was right behind him with 9 markers. Jeremy Jenkins added 8, while Adonis Major added 7 and Hawkins 6 points. Korbin Scott and Larry Young tallied 4 apiece, while Jessie Ward and Jarrain Jenkins scored 2 apiece.
