Plaquemine High and White Castle continued last week to lead the way in boys’ parish prep basketball competition.

Here are brief updates.

PHS: The Green Devils opened District 8-3A competition on the road Friday night with a 66-37 victory over hosting Port Allen. Jeffrey Ricard led the way for the 22-1 overall with 20 points. Class 3-A top-ranked Plaquemine boys with 20 points. It was PHS’ 21st straight victory of the season.

The Green Devils warmed up for their first league game by downing parish 1-A neighbor East Iberville High by a 47-31 score earlier in the week. Ricard had 14 to lead the way in that victory. EIHS jumped from the frying pan into the fire as they followed up the home loss to top-ranked PHS by falling on the road to Class A number two-ranked district rival Christian Life on the road Friday night.

WCHS: The Bulldogs pushed their District 8-A leading mark to a perfect 5-0 and finally evened up their season mark at 12-12 by ripping Ascension Christian by a 71-41 count as a trio of Bulldogs tallied in double figures. Earlier in the week the Bulldogs beat St. John 68-36 for their fourth-straight district win. WCHS entered the week ranked ninth in the Class A hoop poll.

EIHS: The Tigers lost their second-straight game of the week to a top-ranked foe, this time around to 8-A hosting rival Christian Life by a 88-72 score. The Class A eighth-ranked Tigers fell behind early, played better in the second half, but still fell way short of victory as they slipped to 3-2 in district play and to 12-9 overall.

SJHS: The St. John boys bounced back from a home loss to parish and 8-A rival White Castle earlier in the week to notch a non-district win over Family Christian by a 58-36 score Friday night. Da’vante Williams led the way for the hosting Eagles with 26 points. The win upped SJHS to 5-9 for the season. Williams and Nick Baldwin had 12 points apiece in their league loss earlier in the week to WCHS by a 68-36 score.

GIRLS HOOP: Plaquemine High improved to 2-1 in District 8-3A girls’ basketball Friday night with a 54-36 victory over hosting Port Allen. The victory put the Lady Green Devils right back into the league race after an opening 8-3A loss to league-leading St. James. Candace Hastings led PHS with 18 points.

White Castle’s Lady Bulldogs remained in the title hunt in 8-A basketball with a 50-6 win over Ascension Christian Friday night. WCHS moved to 6-1 in league play with EIHS and West St. John giving closest chase. Erin Allen and Shelby Martin led the offense with 11 points apiece.

The WCHS girls beat St. John earlier in the week by a 44-38 score. Allen led the way with 18 points, while Jessie Brown tallied 13 for SJHS.

The SJHS Lady Eagles rebounded from the district loss Friday night with a non-league 49-18 victory over Family Christian. The win boosted the Plaquemine school to 5-14 overall. Brown and Hannah Pitre combined for 29 points to lead the way.

East Iberville suffered a tough 8-A road loss Friday night at the hands of host Christian Life. The hostesses claimed a 58-52 victory to boost their 8-A mark to 2-5. The EI Lady Tigers fell to 5-2 in district play, but remained in the league title hunt. Dionickka Calloway led EI with 19 points.
