In honor of former LSU football coach and athletic director Paul Dietzel, who died this week at the age of 89, LPB will air his Louisiana Legends interview Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m.
In the world of Louisiana football, Paul Dietzel is an icon.
After flying combat missions over Japan in World War II, Dietzel returned to college where he was an All-American center. After graduation, he became an assistant coach working alongside coaching legends Vince Lombardi and Bear Bryant.
Named as LSU's head coach in 1955, Dietzel led the Tigers to the national championship in 1958 and barely missed winning a second title in 1959. His 46 victories are the third most in LSU history. He later coached at Army and South Carolina before returning in 1978 as LSU Athletic Director, a position he held until 1982.
Dietzel was also an artist and helped support LPB by donating his artwork to the LPB Art & Travel Auction.
