A group of local kids decided that it was better to give than to receive this past holiday season by donating to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Carl Gailes, a native of Plaquemine and a 1982 graduate of Plaquemine High School, spends his time serving his country for 22 years and wanted to teach his young nieces and nephews the true meaning of Christmas this year by giving.

On Christmas morning, Gailes and his nieces and nephews gathered at their grandmother and great grandmother’s house where they put t-shirts with the St. Jude logo and watched a video about the children that benefit from St. Jude donations.

The children then gathered outside, according to Gailes, and received donation envelopes with money which they gladly returned.

“I explained to them that there is always someone that is in need of help,” Gailes said.  “Their ages ranged from two to thirteen, and they all understood the importance of what they were doing.”
