The score at the end of Friday’s game, 24-21, proved the Plaquemine Green Devils’ three-point win over Ouachita Parish High’s Lions was a close game.
It was – and apparently an exciting one. The lead changed repeatedly with Plaquemine on top first, 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, then Ouachita Parish tied it, then tacked on another touchdown to lead 7-14 in the second quarter.
The Green Devils tied the knot in the score at 14 in the second, but yet another TD in Ouachita Parish’s explosive second quarter put the Lions up by 7. The 21 points Ouachita Parish High put on the scoreboard in the second quarter would be the Monroe-based team’s only scoring.
The running game, dominated by Plaquemine High, was the deciding factor in the non-conference matchup.
Ranked No. 4 in the state’s Class 4-A division, the Green Devils erased a 7-point deficit at halftime with a strong second half to top the Lions. The win pushes Plaquemine High to 4-1 while Ouachita Parish fell to 3-2.
The long ride to Monroe didn’t seem to tire the Devils who came out for the second half behind by a 21-14 score. Even after a three-hour ride to north Louisiana, Plaquemine High’s offense had the oomph to score 10 unanswered points.
Some of the statistics were close, many were not.
Plaquemine and Ouachita Parish went tit for tat in first downs, 10 to 11, respectively. In the ground game, though, the Green Devils blasted the Lions with 38 rushes for 302 yards, while Ouachita Parish only earned 112 yards with 40 carries.
The Lions won the air battle, but only by a margin of 31 yards. Plaquemine’s Green Devils picked up 83 yards to Ouachita Parish’s 114.
The Lions’ quarterback put the ball in the air 19 times but only seven were receptions. One was a touchdown pass in the second quarter, a 41-yard bomb to Joshua Newton.
Green Devil quarterback Michael Sproles threw 16 passes – nine were caught, one for a touchdown. Proles found the talented Michael Toussant for a 15-yard TD in the second quarter to tie the score 14-14.
The points after both touchdowns were kicked by Braydon David, who put the icing on the Plaquemine High win with a field goal in the fourth quarter from 27 yards out.
Ouachita Parish would score again in the second quarter with a 48-yard pass from quarterback Jabari Johnson to Datron Harper. Wynton Calhoun tacked on the PAT.
The Plaquemine Green Devils lit up the scoreboard first with a 62-yard dash into the end zone by Herbert Thomas in the first quarter, but the lead was short-lived.
A 2-yard rushing touchdown by Ouachita Parish’s Johnson finished off with a PAT by Calhoun tied up the score in the second quarter. The Lions took the lead later in the second with Newton’s long reception.
The Green Devils tied the game again in the third quarter when Thomas ran almost half the field for a 48-yard TD rush, capped with another David PAT.
There were miscues aplenty. The two teams fumbled four times – Plaquemine turned the ball over twice with its three fumbles and Ouachita Parish lost its only fumble.
Penalties were troublesome for the Green Devils, who lost 82 yards after being penalized 13 times. Ouachita had penalty problems as well – their six penalties took 55 yards away from their total yardage.
