Summer has officially arrived. Even though in Louisiana it’s felt like summer for months, we finally welcomed the season over the weekend, and I, for one, could not be more excited.
It seems like some people always have something negative to say. Summer is too hot, there's nothing for the kids to do all day, whatever. To me, summer is the second best season of the year. (Just wait a few months to hear about my fave.) Yes, it's hot. But thankfully there are all sorts of ways to combat that in Louisiana, where water and sunshine are abundant. Let's not forget about snoballs and daiquiris too.
I’m already planning all of my summer fun as if I was still in school. In post-graduation life where work never stops, the summer comes with a bit less freedom than it used to, but I still think it’s the best time to make time for some fun. I’ve got my summer to-do list all lined out, and I’m ready to go.
Because this is Louisiana, the first item on my agenda is spending as much time in or on the water as possible. Whether it’s on a boat reeling in some fish, kayaking down one of the Bayou State’s plentiful rivers, or just hanging out by the pool, being on the water is an absolute must with temperatures reaching triple digits.
That being said, I’m currently accepting applications for new friends who own boats and only slightly joking about that. I plan on finding as many ways as possible to stay cool, and there’s no better way than being able to take a dip when things heat up. Anyone got leads on a water-proof laptop? (Asking for a friend.)
Soaking up some sun is also high on the list. That’s easy enough in Sportsman’s Paradise. Getting a little extra Vitamin D is always great, provided you’re not burning and always wear sunscreen. I love spending time outside. When the weather is nice, I try to be indoors as little as possible.
Summer is a great time for parties of any kind. I am hoping to host my first get-together at my new house in the next month or so. The weather is perfect for it, as long as you’ve got some kind of water and plenty of cold drinks on hand. (A fan or twelve never hurt either.)
Speaking of drinks, summer also comes with all my favorites. It’s time for light, crisp white wines and boozy punches. There's all sorts recipes out there for fun adult popsicles too. Oh, and don’t forget the spiked water melons.
I don’t have children, so most of my parties revolve around adult beverages. But little ones and families can totally get into summer parties too. As I recall during my childhood, all you need is a sprinkler and a box of popsicles, and your house just became the hottest spot on the block. Snoballs are also back in season, and those are great for anyone.
I think summer is the best time to pack up and take a road trip. That may have something to do with why I’ve taken two already. But who’s counting? There’s no better time of year to ride with the windows down and the music up. The weather is great for driving because you can enjoy the views with the AC on.
It doesn’t matter where you go on vacation at this time of year, there’s always something to do. Water parks are open, and summer discounts are in full effect. Whether you’re taking the kids on a family getaway or looking to hit up a music festival with a few friends, everything happens during the summer months.
I'm looking forward to making this summer the best one yet. It's summertime, and the living is easy.
