A 30-year-old mother has been arrested for child desertion after her three children were reported to be in the road in front of her house, according to Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi.
Stassi said this is the second time the woman has been arrested for the same charge -- the first arrest was on June 9. She was charged with child desertion then too.
Theresa Lewis, 62305 Bayou Rd., Plaquemine, has since been released from the parish jail, Stassi said. He added she has three children, 4, 3 and a 9-month-old infant.
Luckily, Stassi said, no harm came to the children despite the obvious danger -- the woman's house is on a busy highway that runs along Bayou Plaquemine, so the children could have been hit by a passing vehicle or drowned in the bayou.
"We can't figure out what's wrong with this woman," Stassi said. "The first time we were called out, the children were found in her yard, sparsely clothed and she wasn't responding to our knocking on the door."
When she did finally come to the door, her husband was contacted and the children were released to him.
"Last Monday, we got the same kind of call, that the children weere out in the yard again and wandering into the road," Stassi said. "When the deputies got there, they couldn't find the children."
Later, the children were found in a neighbor's yard about 100 yards away from her home.
