The identity of a man whose body was dumped in a sugar cane field near Rosedale was a mystery when it was discovered Jan. 1, but it has since been identified, Sheriff Brett Stassi said.
The man’s body was found off Sidney Road in Rosedale not far from I-10 and Grosse Tete early last Tuesday, reportedly around 5 a.m., and the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office released photos of the man’s extensive tattoos in an effort to identify him.
There was no identification on the man later identified as Travis Smart, 28, but by the next day, he had been identified.
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the case as a homicide, Stassi said, adding it appears Smart died of gunshot wounds.
The case is still under investigation and the Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who has any information about the apparent crime is asked to call (225) 687-5333 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-STOP.
