St. John and White Castle High garnered first-round state playoff football victories Friday night to continue into the regionals of postseason competition this week.
Meanwhile, Plaquemine High and neighboring District 8-A rivals Brusly and Port Allen High all fell in first round Class 3-A competition Friday. PHS lost to hosting Independence High 28-6, while Brusly fell by a narrow 22-21 score to visiting 8-3A rival St. James in a defensive struggle. Port Allen lost to hosting Rayville in a high-scoring 59-28 loss.
St. John (10-1 and top-seeded in Class A) trounced visiting Christian Life Academy in Plaquemine 53-31. The hosting Eagles beat CLA in District 8-A play 47-6 in their first regular season meeting.
SJHS advanced to a regional contest this coming Friday night at number 17-seeded Ouachita Christian (7-4). The hosts blasted a defensively-weak Central CHS of Morgan City by a 66-34 score Friday night.
White Castle High pulled off a mild upset on the road by beating hosting St. Martin High by a 22-9 score. WCHS entered the game with a number 20 seed, while SMHS was seeded 13th. The Bulldogs continue on this week to play number four-seeded Haynesville High, however the WCHS boys gained home field advantage for the regional contest. Haynesville topped number 29-seeded Kentwood by a 34-12 score Friday.
West St. John, a District 8-A rival of St. John and White Castle, also won its first-round contest, topping Vermillion CHS by a 53-0 score.
Plaquemine High was seeded number 22, while host Independence was the number 11 seed. Brusly was seeded seventh in 3-A, while St. James was the number 26th seed despite tying Brusly for the 8-3A crown. Port Allen was the number 24-seeded team, while Rayville was seeded ninth.
