Ouachita 10, Sterlington 9
Buoyed by Carson Lyon's grand slam home run, Sterlington exploded for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but it wasn't enough as Ouachita held on for a 10-9 decision Tuesday afternoon.
Maddi Bond's two-run homer, which followed a one-out walk to Britney Fendall, gave Ouachita a 10-3 lead in the top of the seventh and proved to be the margin of victory.
Sterlington would not go down without resistance.
Kaela Mullins reached on a leadoff error and Hannah Jerkins hit into a force play.
Back to the top of the order, Tanner Wilson doubled and Breanna Sylvestri and K.B. Briley walked to force in a run. Rebekah Wood then lined a single to right, setting up Lyon's home run over the center field fence.
Re-inserted in the circle, Ouachita ace Allie Ellerbe retired the side with a groundout and a popup to cement the Lady Lions' (28-4) 12th straight victory.
Ouachita jumped out to a 6-1 advantage with treys in the first and second and widened the margin to 8-1 with two in the fifth.
Alyssa Allen and Tiya Randle, the game's first two batters, reached safely on a walk and an error. Consecutive two-out singles by Madelin Fletcher, Taylor Lenard and Ellerbe staked the visitors to an early 3-0 lead.
Sterlington closed within 3-1 in its half of the first when Wilson singled, Sylvestri walked, Briley bunted the runners over and Wood lifted a sacrifice fly to center field.
Jordyn Manning's two-out, two-run double and Fletcher's RBI double keyed Ouachita's three-run second.
Alyssa Allen's two-out, two-run single gave the Lady Lions a commanding 8-1 edge in the sixth.
Catherine Trichell drove in two runs with a two-out double in the home portion of the sixth to bring the Lady Panthers within 8-3.
Ellerbe worked a total of 4.2 innings for the win, with Manning in middle relief.
Setting the tone from the No. 9 spot in the batting order, Bond homered and doubled as Ouachita out-hit the Lady Panthers 9-8. Fletcher doubled and singled, Alyssa Allen had two singles, Manning doubled and Lenard and Ellerbe singled.
Hitting for the Lady Panthers (26-6) were Wilson with a double and two singles, Trichell with a double and a single, Lyon with a round tripper, and Briley and Wood with base hits.
Sylvestri started the game in the circle for the Lady Panthers, with Wilson and Emarie Adams finishing out.
