Plaquemine, La. -

American Legion Post 167 older boys’ baseball team as well as the St. John High varsity based Armadillo A Metro diamond team both maintained winning records through games played last week as their summer schedules continued.

The 167 club and the Armadillo A and B Metro teams, as well as Plaquemine High’s Metro club, played into next week to complete their regular seasons.

Post 167 completes River League competition and looks to compete in the regional American Legion tournament the weekend of July 10-12. The locals warm up for state and regional tourney play by attending the La. Elite tournament, beginning today (Thursday, July 2).

The SJHS-based Metro and PHS-based Metro clubs close out their seasons with final league games next week.

St. John High will begin its summer baseball/football camp Monday, July 13, then preseason football begins Monday, July 27. The Eagle football team will attend a football camp in Mississippi for the second year in a row, beginning Thursday, July 30.

LEGION POST 167:
The senior American Legion baseball team pushed its season record to a solid 5-2 through last week.

The 18 and over boys’ team defeated White Castle Metro by a 17-2 score, but lost in the championship game of the recent St. John hosted Legion tournament in Plaquemine to Catholic High in extra innings by a narrow 5-4 score.

Former Plaquemine High standout Logan LeJeune and recent SJHS graduates Jarod Purpera and Justin Hudson led the way for the 167 club.

The locals went on to split their next two games, falling by a narrow 8-7 count to Gonzales-based River League rival Gauthier-Amadee and then garnering an easy forfeit 2-0 victory over Gerry Lane of Baton Rouge. The one run loss to Gonzales was the closest a Post 167 team has come to beating their River League rivals in recent seasons.

Coach Heath Whittington said everyone in the lineup hit, but the team had no extra base hits in the narrow loss. Ryan Suarez started the game on the mound and former PHS standout Cody Devillier turned in a solid effort in relief, impressing Whittington since he joined the club recently.
Whittington said Devillier, LeJeune, Hudson, former Green Devil Blake Sylvester, and returning SJHS players Shea Ourso and Landon Landry have all been solid players thus far this summer for the older boys’ Legion club.

ARMADILLO A METRO:
The St. John varsity-based Armadillo summer baseball team pushed its record to an impressive 9-6 with a run of three consecutive victories over the last two weeks before losing Friday by a narrow 4-3 score in ten innings to West Feliciana.

Ryan Suarez and Corey David pitched well for the Armadillos in the narrow loss.

The Armadillos beat Runnels Academy Metro by a narrow 5-4 count before routing Tara Metro 10-0 and topping Woodlawn Metro 8-5 as they rolled up three-straight wins before Friday’s one-run loss.

“Our 8-5 victory over Woodlawn was one heck of a game. Woodlawn has a lot of talent, but our boys came through with the victory. They scored first on a two-run home run in the first inning, but we battled back to tie it and win it,” explained Whittington.

Shea Ourso had an outstanding effort for the Armadillos in the win over Woodlawn. He pitched in relief to save the victory, but was overwhelming at the plate.
Ourso went three for four with a grand slam home run, another home run, and a triple. It was his grand slam that put the game away and broke a 3-3 tie. Doubles by Wesley Miller and Landon Landry to go with a walk issued to Corey David provided an insurance run in the victory.
Kade Yarbrough, Herman Fitch, and Ourso pitched in the victory.

ARMADILLO B METRO:
The SJHS JV-based Metro B baseball team slipped to 5-10 through Thursday of last week, but managed to take a recent 9-5 victory over St. Michael’s Metro team.

“We have them playing some tough, older aged Metro A teams this summer. This is a young group, but they have been competitive despite the up-schedule of opponents,” noted Whittington.
The club has been led recently by Morgan Booksh, Seth Gulotta, Conner Case, and Dakota Richard.

167 NOTES:
Recent graduates Blake Sylvester of Plaquemine High and Andre Landry of St. John are headed to Baton Rouge Community College and will play baseball for Coach L.J. Dupuy, who mentored Brusly Legion baseball for many years.

Jarod Purpera, a recent SJHS grad, is headed to Southern University to play baseball. Coach Whittington has sent other players he had mentored on the prep level to Southern ahead of Jarod.
Returning SJHS ball players Shea Ourso and Landry Landry are headed to the University of Central Florida in late July to work out for the school’s baseball coaches who have shown an interest in seeing the talents.

FINAL NOTE: Coach Cory Alleman did not return our telephone calls over the weekend as PS SPORTS attempted to get an update on the Green Devils summer diamond team. We know Alleman and his wife were expected the birth of their first child any day now, and coach could be very busy right now!
