Plaquemine, La. -

Top-ranked St. John High and East Iberville claimed District 8-A football victories Friday night to advance in league play, while parish neighbors Plaquemine High and White Castle lost games.

St. John romped to a 48-7 victory over hosting Ascension CHS in Donaldsonville Friday night, scoring 27 unanswered first-half points and then adding 13 more in the third period. Five different Eagles scored touchdowns. Josh Johnson and Davante Williams led the way with two apiece, while Casey Toussaint, Warren Bates, and Corey David added scores.

SJHS moved to 7-1 for the year and to 3-0 in district play.

East Iberville claimed its first 8-A victory after a pair of losses by trimming Christian Life 26-22. Senior Mitch Johnson scored three times, once on a pass interception return. Johnson grabbed two TD passes from quarterback Brandon James, who fired a third TD toss to Nicholas Brooks.

EIHS evened up its season record at 4-4. EIHS visits St. John in Plaquemine this Thursday night.

Plaquemine High suffered a mild upset 30-14 loss to neighboring District 8-3A rival Brusly High. Coupled with Port Allen’s 20-13 victory over St. James, the local football league title and playoff berths are up for grabs with all four teams, plus Livonia High, still in the hunt.

PHS fell to 1-1 in district play and to 6-2 overall. Brusly is also 1-1, while Port Allen and St. James are both 2-1 and Livonia is 0-2.

PHS visits St. James Friday night in an attempt to get back into a good spot in the 8-3A standings.

White Castle High slipped to 1-2 and into a three-way tie for third place with East Iberville and ACHS in the 8-A race after falling Friday night by a narrow 29-23 score to visiting West St. John.

The win kept West St. John in first-place tie with St. John in the 8-A grid race as both teams moved to 3-0 Friday night.

The 3-4 overall WCHS Bulldogs garnered a pair of TD passes from quarterback Ronald Martin and a 60-yard TD run by Tyree Bracken, but it was not enough as the WSJHS rallied for a pair of second-half touchdowns to overcome a 15-14 edge held by the hostings locals midway in the game. Jonathan Roberts recorded 22 tackles for WCHS in the losing effort.

WCHS visits Christian Life Academy in Baton Rouge Friday with hopes of getting back into the 8-A title race.
