A high-speed chase on Belleview Road (La. 75) resulted in the arrest of a Plaquemine man last Thursday, a spokesman for the Iberville Sheriff's Office said.
Darius Perkins, 21, was charged with aggravated assault, monetary instrument abuse and reckless operation of a vehicle, said Capt. Aubrey St. Angelo.
Officers responded to a report of an altercation between two men on Patureau Lane. Witnesses said one of the men was driving an older white vehicle and had a pistol, St. Angelo said.
He said when deputies tried to stop a vehicle matching the description; the driver sped up and appeared to be trying to elude the deputies.
Using lights and sirens, deputies followed the car down Belleview at a high rate of speed, St. Angelo said. He said, after the fleeing car narrowly missed other vehicles and forced some of them off the road, an ISO sergeant tried to block a lane of traffic.
“The [pursued] vehicle appeared to make an attempt to strike the sheriff's unit,” St. Angelo said, but the deputy was “quick-witted enough to get out of harms way.”
The attempt to strike the sheriff's patrol car led to the aggravated assault charge, the captain said; a counterfeit $20 bill found in the suspect's car once it was stopped led to the monetary instrument abuse charge.
As of Monday, Perkins remained in the Iberville Parish Jail in lieu of a $25,000 bond set by District Judge William C. Dupont.
