LSU signed its 2013 Class on National Signing Day Wednesday with the hope there were not any 11th hour flips by the Tigers’ 27 pledges.
The class will be regarded as one of the nation’s top with the likes of five-star defensive back Tre’Davious White of Green Oaks in Shreveport and a slew of four-star recruits within the state in East Feliciana athlete Kendell Beckwith, Westgate offensive lineman Josh Boutte, Loranger defensive back Jeryl Brazil, Jewel Sumner defensive back Jeremy Cutrer, Neville wide receiver John Diarse, Destrehan defensive back Rickey Jefferson, Denham Springs defensive tackle Tevin Lawson, Barbe tight end DeSean Smith and Holy Cross wide receiver Kevin Spears.
In other signing news, Plaquemine’s Hakeem Deggs was expected to sign with Northern Colorado after committing a couple of weeks ago. A signing party for Deggs is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday in the Plaquemine High School Field House.
“It is really good that he has somewhere to go,” Plaquemine coach Paul Distefano said. “He really enjoyed the campus and felt good about the coaching staff. They want him on offense and are going to use him as a slot receiver and running back.”
Deggs helped lead the Green Devils to a 6-5 overall record and berth in the Class 4A playoffs after amassing 2,156 all-purpose yards this season.
A first-team all-district selection at three positions, Deggs rushed for 1,056 yards and 12 touchdowns on 110 carries and caught 28 passes for 486 yards and four scores. He also registered 23 tackles, four interceptions, five fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles and 10 pass breakups.
“I told Hakeem a long time ago that he would have a chance to be a little fish in a big pond or a big fish in a little pond and I think in this case he will really have a chance to shine. They will put the ball in his hands.”
