WHITE CASTLE – White Castle High School settled down after a strong St. John first quarter to blow open the lead and run away with a 92-43 District 9-1A victory on Monday night at WCHS' gym.
The LSWA No. 10 ranked Bulldogs (14-9, 7-1), under coach Troy Green, also defeated Ascension Catholic (9-18, 3-5) 88-67 on Friday night but are No. 22 in unofficial Class 1A power rankings. White Castle traveled to West St. John (7-10, 5-3) on Tuesday and wrap up the regular season with a showdown against first-place East Iberville (13-10, 8-0) with district championship implications on the line.
"This is a big week for us," Green said. "Like I always say, we are taking it one game at a time. We start off on the road at West St. John and we expect this to be a hard fought match. Hopefully, we can bring our best game."
St. John High School in Plaquemine (3-20, 1-7), under coach Oliver "Cricket" Crockett, also fell to West St. John 69-22 on Tuesday night and are No. 49 in unofficial power ratings. The Eagles hosted East Iberville on Tuesday night and will wrap up the regular season on Friday night at Ascension Christian.
DeAndre Bellock led the Bulldogs with 20 points including one 3-pointer. Samson Westley added 13 on three treys, Jacory Washington 10, Omari Haggens eight, JaTyre Carter seven, Swayne Edwards, Moses Young and Tyidous Lang each six, Shawn Williams five, Tyrie Lang and Byron Pierre each four, Harold Zachary two and Marcellis Coleman one.
Hayden Hemenway had a game-high 21 points for St. John including six 3-pointers. Tyler St. Germain added 10 on two treys, Brennan Miller six and Bailey Whittington, Gavin Primeaux and Collin Crockett each two.
Bellock scored the first seven points of the second quarter after sitting half of the first quarter following a mass substitution near the four-minute mark. He finished with 12 in the frame, the final three on a 3-pointer from the left corner to put White Castle ahead 36-17 before another exodus at the 3:14 mark.
Bellock opened the frame with two transition baskets, the first for a 3-point play before sandwiching slam dunks off steals around Miller's putback.
Westley's layup off a steal made it 48-19 at the half following Edwards and Tyidous Lang's 3-pointers from the top of the key.
Edwards' trey opened the contest before Bellock converted off a steal but Hemenway and St. Germain each connected behind the arc to give the Eagles the lead 6-5.
Hememway and St. Germain did it again following Bellock's first slam-dunk to put St. John ahead 12-9 at about the first substitution. Westley's 3-pointer from the top of the key and Pierre's layup off a steal put White Castle ahead for good.
Another Hemenway 3-pointer cut it to 18-17 going into the second quarter after Tyidous Lang's trey from the right wing. White Castle led 70-34 going into the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs led Ascension Catholic 21-12 going into the second quarter and 40-26 at the half before taking a 60-48 lead into the fourth.
Bellock had a game-high 28 points for White Castle. Young added 25, Edwards 14, Williams nine, Tyidous Lang six, Carter four and Westley two.
Kaleb Winchester led the Bulldogs with 23 and Gilbert Allen added 22.
