PLAQUEMINE – Despite outhitting Plaquemine by 10, Lutcher was forced to cling to a 3-0 District 6-4A victory on Thursday afternoon at Joe Distefano Park.
The Green Devils (14-8), under coach Scott Allen, also fell to the Bulldogs 2-1 on Tuesday in Lutcher. Plaquemine advances to the LHSAA Class 4A playoffs as the No. 23 seed and travels to another district foe St. Michael the Archangel on Friday at 4 p.m. for the first round.
"We are so much better than we were at the beginning of the season," Allen said. "We are a real young team. I am just proud that we played our best baseball against a program like that two games in a row. If we can compete with them on a daily basis, then we are doing good."
Ben Cavalier took the loss for Plaquemine allowing 10 hits over five innings while striking out four and walking two.
Dalton Brigalia struck out one in two innings of relief. Julius Maracalin got the Green Devils lone hit.
Sully Laiche got the win for Lutcher striking out one over five innings.
Chase Caldarera was 3-for-4 and Zachary Zimmer, Corey Merrill and Luke LeBlanc were each 2-for-4.
Lutcher opened the contest with five straight singles to go ahead 1-0 but Plaquemine limited the damage when a runner was picked off by Cavalier and another was caught stealing from catcher Chris Cox to shortstop Francisco Gonzales.
The Bulldogs added two runs in the fifth. Martin and Jared Poche each drew walks and following a double steal, a run scored on a pitch in the dirt. Caldarera followed with an RBI-single to reflect the final tally.
Plaquemine led 1-0 in the first inning Tuesday before Lutcher posted two runs in the third. Caldarera earned the win and Brigalia took the loss.
Brigalia was 2-for-2 at the plate and Maracalin (double, RBI) and Cavalier were each 1-for-2.
Zimmer was 2-for-4 with two doubles and Martin and Caldarera were each 1-for-3.
