GONZALES - White Castle High School jumped out to a 46-point halftime lead and continued to roll in a 66-6 District 8-1A victory over Ascension Christian on Friday night.
The Bulldogs (5-3, 2-1), under coach Lamar Thomas, amassed over 300 yards of total offense with 240 of it coming on the ground to rebound from its first district loss and remain in the hunt for the league title.
"It is good to get back on the winning track but we have the two most important ball games ahead of us and we have to take them one at a time," Thomas said. "We feel like we are still in the driver's seat. All we have to do is take care of business.
"We didn't make any changes, personnel is pretty much the same and we are healthy now."
White Castle had four players score multiple touchdowns. Dontrell Taylor rushed for a touchdown and had a touchdown reception. Robert Franklin returned a punt for a score and had a reception for another.
Bulldog quarterback Jacory Jones threw two touchdown passes and Daryl Young and Moses Young each rushed for touchdowns and returned interceptions for another. Daniel Edwards rushed for a touchdown and Harold Zachary had two two-point conversion runs.
Lion quarterback Darrin Landry threw for 150 yards and one touchdown for Ascension Christian (1-7, 0-3).
Taylor's 18-yard scamper and Moses Young's conversion run put White Castle on the board in the first quarter. Franklin's 72-yard punt return increased the lead before he caught a 34-yard scoring pass from Jones and Zachary's conversion run gave the Bulldogs a 24-0 lead still in the first frame.
"We specialize in our return game trying to find ways to return the ball," Thomas said. "We know that it can be a weapon for us so we work hard on it. We can't rely on it but we try to treat them like they are an offensive snap. We practice it like it is a chance to score or get good field position."
Daryl Young's 1-yard burst increased the lead to 46-0 at the half after his 30-yard interception return for a score and Taylor's 55-yard touchdown reception from Jones.
Edwards' 30-yard jaunt opened the second half before Young's conversion run pushed the lead to 54-0 in the third quarter.
Moses Young's 3-yard touchdown run and 40-yard interception return for a score completed White Castle's scoring increasing the lead to 66-0.
Landry's 46-yard touchdown pass to Kagan Carter put the Lions on the board late in the fourth quarter.
White Castle hosts rival Ascension Catholic (5-3, 2-1) on Friday night at Milton "Rocky" Ourso Stadium.
There is currently a three-way tie for second place in league standing between the two Bulldogs and St. John (2-6, 2-1) behind West St. John (6-2, 3-0).
