The city has worked with the Capital Region Planning Commission and Villavaso & Associates, zoning specialists, for over a year to update zoning definitions to reflect current trends and situations, and to add clarifying language so that the city is positioned well for economic growth in the future.

The City of Plaquemine Mayor and Board of Selectmen will hold a public hearing on proposed updates to the city's zoning ordinances on Tuesday, April 9, at 6:30 p.m.

The hearing will be held in the City Hall courtroom located on the 2nd Floor, 23640 Railroad Avenue, Plaquemine, and the public is invited to attend.

The city has worked with the Capital Region Planning Commission and Villavaso & Associates, zoning specialists, for over a year to update zoning definitions to reflect current trends and situations, and to add clarifying language so that the city is positioned well for economic growth in the future. The resulting zoning code changes were reviewed and approved by the Plaquemine Zoning Commission in March.

The changes reflect updating some 180 definitions regarding zoning standards, and modifying the existing zoning district uses and standards into a table for ease of use.

"We had an issue come up with zoning for a proposed motel shortly after I became mayor, and it quickly became apparent that updating of the zoning ordinances was needed," explained Mayor Edwin "Ed" Reeves, Jr.

"We contacted the Capital Region Planning Commission for assistance, and their help has been invaluable in this endeavor. We have cleaned up the definitions and requirements for zoning districts, which provide a clear path forward for both the city and for those wanting to develop businesses or residential projects in our city," he said.
