The No. 28 Plaquemine Green Devils have punched their ticket to the second round of the LHSAA 4A playoffs after handing a one-point 8-7 defeat to No. 5 North DeSoto on Tuesday.

PHS pulled off the upset after seven innings of play.  They faced a 1-0 run deficit after two innings, but the Devils kicked it into high gear in the top of the third with three runs.

Both teams blanked the fourth inning, and each put up one run in the fifth and three in the sixth.  The Devils scored one run in the top of the seventh, to take a 8-5 lead and held North DeSoto to just two runs to close out the final innings and give the Devils the round one upset win.

Dewayne Askins was the team’s lead hitter with three and three RBIs.  Albert Deville and Jacob Allen each racked up a pair of RBIs in the win.

Michael Sproles pitched 5.2 innings in the victory and racked up 14 first pitch strikes and three strikeouts.

The first round Green Devil win comes after six straight seasons of falling in the first round and is the team’s first playoff victory in eight years.  The Devils advanced to round two and will take on No. 21 Salmen in a best of three series this weekend.

The three remaining Iberville teams will take the field this afternoon.  In the 1A bracket, No. 13 East Iberville Tigers will host No. 20 White Castle Bulldogs in a regular season district rematch.

In Division IV, the No. 7 St. John Eagles will host No. 10 Houma Christian.
