Reason for the season: Plaquemine Main Street Program hosts Annual Children's Christmas Festival

PLAQUEMINE – Despite a steady rain, the City of Plaquemine's Main Street Program ushered in the Holiday Season by hosting a Children's Christmas Festival on Sunday afternoon at the Bayou Plaquemine Waterfront Park.

The event was originally started in 1993 but briefly stopped while the site was under construction, according to Main Street Manager Kristine Hebert.

"This is an event for the community," Hebert said. "We don't have a rain out day so thanks to this 10,000 square foot pavilion, we are still able to have it under a dry roof. It was built specifically with this in mind and we are still moving forward and people are coming out."

Although the parade of children in decorated non-motorized wagons was canceled, Santa Claus still arrived by boat "Cajun Style" along Bayou Plaquemine to take pictures with them.

Iberville Relay for Life partnered with Top Notch Catering to offer fried fish dinners as a fundraiser for cancer awareness and the full slate of activities for children included a puppet show, balloon twister mister, strolling magic show, cup cake decorating and music and performances by local groups.

Special attractions included the strolling juggler on stilts, along with spinning flags and hula-hoop demonstrations.

The Plaquemine Depot Market will be open daily Dec. 12-23 and close Dec. 24 – Jan. 1.
