PLAQUEMINE – Craft classes at BRCC Westside began Monday, Jan. 13.

The new National Center for Construction Education and Research craft training classes include electrical, instrumentation, pipefitting and millwright.

Classes are Monday and Wednesday nights from 5:30 to 8:30 p. m. through Wednesday, June 4, 2014.

The cost is $150 for electrical and instrumentation and $200 for pipefitting and millwright.

Louisiana employers are expected to fill over 86,000 skilled industrial construction jobs through 2016 and in today's market, there are not enough qualified trade crafts people in the state to meet the demand.

In response, BRCC offers the NCCER curriculum, which provides industry based credentials that are both knowledge verified through written assessments and performance verified through performance verifications.

Students will receive NCCER completion certificates for each level they complete and are qualified to be hired as a helper at a rate of $15 or more per hour after the completion of Level 1 training in as little as four months.

Dow and many of the local contractors including Jacobs, Turner, Westgate, Performance, Axiall, and Shintec are involved with BRCC Westside and provide support through an advisory council, scholarship assistance, and employment opportunities for students.

The cost is supplemented by grant funds from the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. Textbooks are included.

Students can register online at https://registration.xenegrade.com/mybrcc.
