Iberville Parish School System announces 2014 District Teachers of the Year
PLAQUEMINE - The 2014 Teacher of the Year Program for Iberville Parish got underway with a ceremony Jan. 16 at Iberville Parish School System's Performing Arts Center to honor 17 outstanding teachers recognized for exceptional teaching and leadership abilities.
They are Iberville Parish Elementary School Teacher of Year Jessica Dominique of North Iberville Elementary School, Middle School Teacher of Year Matthew Zito of Plaquemine High School and High School Teacher of Year Jessica Millien of MSA-West. All three will compete in the upcoming regional competition.
Dominique is certified in elementary education grades 1-5 and is a Teacher Leader and Education Leader. She earned an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and a graduate degree in Educational Leadership. She also completed 30 additional graduate hours in Curriculum and Instruction in 2013. She loves to analyze data that is an important part of keeping students on an educational track of consistent progress.
Zito is a Louisiana history teacher and coach. He is certified in history for grades 6-12th. His first semester teaching was January 2013 and he loves to make his history classes fun for his students. They say he "brings life to the classroom."
Millien is also a high school history teacher. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Art in Teaching. She began teaching in 2009 and was greatly influenced by her mother, a first grade teacher for 27 years. She is certified in secondary social studies and secondary English.
"It makes a big difference to my career knowing I have made a difference in someone's life," Millien said.
The Louisiana Teacher of the Year Awards Program co-sponsored by the Louisiana Department of Education and the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education is an annual event designed to recognize, evaluate, and activate outstanding elementary, middle, and high school teachers throughout the state.
The program provides an excellent opportunity to recognize teachers from each local school system and to publicize the positive aspects of classroom teaching.
The statewide competition is part of a national awards program in which a National Teacher of the Year is selected. This program will honor teachers who have been selected by their respective faculties based on their performance throughout the 2013-2014 school year.
The Presentation of Colors were performed by Plaquemine High Junior ROTC. Elvis J. Cavalier welcomed guest and presentations were made by school administrators Geralyn Callegan, Alnita Miller and P. Edward Cancienne, Jr.
Cancienne spoke to the attendees about the teachers' significance and importance to students, parents, and the community.
Musical selections were performed by the MSA-West Orchestra led by Dr. Michael Berthelot. Iberville School administrator Dianna Outlaw thanked Cryister Overton, Joycelyn Bueche, Terry Gallagher, Joanne Carline, Becky Sue Bickham, Kim Comeaux, Diane Delone and Eon Simon for their assistance.
