LAFAYETTE - St. John the Evangelist High School's Eagle Robotics team earned first-place honors in the state championship-qualifying tournament held Saturday, Jan. 11 hosted by Red Stick Robotics and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Eleven teams from around Acadiana competed in the qualifying tournament, where robots built by the students on the teams complete tasks in order to score points.

The robots are controlled by remote and by computer software operated by team members.

The Eagle Robotics team earned a spot in the state championship tournament to be held in February with the win.

The Eagles have also been invited to compete at the Open Robotic Championship - Vex High School Division, in Omaha, Neb. in April.
