PLAQUEMINE - Iberville Parish Library is proud to present the Fourth Annual Jazz Night at the Main Library on Thursday, February 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

As part of the celebration of Black History Month the featured performers for Jazz Night will be the Southern University Jazzy Jags.

Light refreshments will be served sponsored by the Friends of the Iberville Public Libraries.

The Jazzy Jags is the official name of the Jazz ensemble at Southern University.

Although the name was adopted only a few years ago, the band has been in existence since 1968 and was founded by the late Alvin Batiste Sr.

Since its inception the ensemble has been an incubator for a Who’s Who list of professional jazz, funk, R&B and blues musicians and vocalists.

Now under the direction of Batiste’s former students Harry Anderson Sr. and Herman Jackson, the Jazzy Jags continue to develop original music and perform jazz standards and popular music.

The ensemble performs annually at The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, The Alcorn Jazz Festival in Vicksburg, Miss., The Southern University Founders Day Lunch and etc.

The Jazzy Jags have also performed for the East Baton Rouge Library Jazz series which was videoed by COX cable, Jones Creek Branch Library and the Scotlandville Branch Library.
