Somewhere over the rainbow: We Are The Difference, Inc.'s Iberville Community Theatre presents Oz the Musical

PLAQUEMINE - We Are The Difference, Inc.’s Iberville Community Theatre presented the musical “Oz” nightly April 26-27 at the Carl F. Grant Civic Center.

“This musical is a great evening out for the entire family,” WATD president Rhonda Harrell said.

Gina LoBue served as director and Laura Bellot was the costume designer, a first for the theatre.

“Being given the chance to direct such an amazing cast has truly surpassed my dreams,” LoBue said. “Community theatre taps into the strength that lies within us.

“We are able to learn so much about ourselves through the experiences of theatrical world. My belief is that these experiences teach us how to be better members of society and in turn give us the passion to strive for a better community, state and world.”

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a 1900 novel by L. Frank Baum, which has been adapted into several different works, most notable the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.

The story chronicles the adventures of a young girl named Dorothy Gale in the Land of Oz after being swept away from her Kansas farm home in a cyclone. 

Along the way she befriends the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman and Cowardly Lion as they follow the yellow brick road through the Land of Oz to the Emerald City.

Oz the Musical performed by The Iberville Community Theatre was adapted by Tim Kelly with music and lyrics by Bill Francoeur.

Participating in the production include Susan Devillier (music direction), LeAnn Marionneaux (set design), Brett Harrell (sound design), Emily Courtade (make up), Bobbi Wamsley (make up), Anneleis Martinez (Oz caricature), Rhett Vaughn (lighting), Craig Bellot (chef) and Mattie Williams (hair.)

Choreographers included Jo Ann Palermo, Vernon Clark, Victoria Hill, Maci DeVillier and Brooke Devillier.

The production included Victoria Hill as Dorothy, Indya Pierre as the Scarecrow, Robert Brown as the Tin Woodsman, Vernon Clark as the Cowardly Lion and Isabella Pollet as Toto. Mike Watts played Oz, Ashley Mendoza was Glinda and Susan Devillier was the Wicked Witch.

The rest of the cast included Olivia Williams, Sarah Rhymer, Isabella LoBue, Madison Brown, Jett Watson, Meghan Brown, Ann-Fairleigh Davison, Adkins Davison, Caden Cannella, Cassidy Cannella, Carly Alleman, Skylar Watson, Stephen Orcino, Natalie Orcino, Paige Alleman, Carly Alleman, Rosemary Brocksmith and Layne Brown.
