Voters approve 10-year fire tax renewals

PLAQUEMINE – Two 10-year tax renewals to generate revenue for fire protection was passed by Iberville Parish voters in the April 5 election.

The first measure is a levy of 3.95 mills on all property that will generate approximately $193,300 annually from 2016 until 2025 for volunteer fire protection services in District 1, which covers most of the St. Gabriel area.

The second ballot measure is a levy of 6.78 mills on all taxable property that’s expected to generate about $100,540 annually between 2015 and 2024. That revenue will fund volunteer fire services in the north Iberville area.

The District 1 renewal received 188 votes or 93 percent of a 6.3 percent official total to pass.

District No. 2’s renewal passed receiving 138 votes in favor or 97 percent of a 19.5 percent official total.
