MSA-West celebrates National School Breakfast Week

PLAQUEMINE – The Iberville Parish School Food Service program celebrated National School Breakfast Week by inviting School Board members and community leaders to a breakfast at the Math Science Arts Academy-West March 7.
The theme for this year’s National School Breakfast Week celebration was, Make Breakfast Time Your Favorite Time, Take Time For School Breakfast.
School Food Service Association of Iberville Parish President Tarlyn Henry and the MSA-West cafeteria staff planned and hosted a community breakfast guests including school board members, supervisory staff and employees, governmental leaders, law enforcement officials, business officials, vendors, clergy, retirees and members of the general public.
The festive breakfast event featured student artwork depicting healthy plates displayed on the cafeteria walls and included free pencils and bookmarks to students. Some of the artwork was used as table placemats for the guests.
While it was National Breakfast Week, the Louisiana School Lunch Week was also included in the celebration with a table featuring Louisiana products.
The featured speaker was Leuna Johnson, School Nutrition Association of Louisiana’s Regional Representative.
Johnson presented information on the role of the School Nutrition Association in helping shape policy for USDA Child Nutrition programs.
Paula Warner, Iberville Parish School Food Service Supervisor, presented some facts about the Iberville Parish School Food Service Program. Warner also presented information on the new USDA nutrition standards for school meals, which began implementation about three years ago and will continue to be phased in over several years.
There are also new nutrition standards for all snacks sold on school campuses that will go into effect for the 2014-15 school year.
