Teachers and administrators from the Math, Science, Arts Academy West accepted the Magnet School of Excellence award from the Magnet Schools of America at its national conference in Hartford, Connecticut on May 18 This year's honor recognizing the MSA-West Elementary program. Attending the convention and the award ceremony were (l to r) Leslie Hebert, Stacy Blanchard, Jeanne Bass, Sondia Funchess, Elvis J. Cavalier, Candice Breaux, Loren McIntyre, Mary Liz Kember and Kelli Vaughn. The award recognizes the top magnet schools in the United States. This is the third year that the school has been recognized by Magnet Schools of America. The Magnet Schools of Merit Awards are given in two categories: Magnet Schools of Excellence, the top category and Magnet Schools of Distinction, the second highest award of recognition. The award recognizes member magnet schools/program schools that demonstrate a high commitment to academic standards, curriculum innovation, desegregation/diversity efforts, specialized teaching staffs, and parent and community involvement. Only three schools in Louisiana received the award, including two in Baton Rouge: McKinley Middle Academic Magnet of Visual and Performing Arts and Sherwood Middle Academic Magnet School.
