Veterans program set for Sunday to include light show, fly-over
The Iberville Salute to Veterans event, set for Nov. 11, will feature a bagpipe group, a Coast Guard helicopter fly-over, the Iberville Wall of Veterans photo display and a special ascending patriotic light show.
The event is set from 2 - 5 p.m. with the ceremony beginning at 4 p.m. It is held at the $1.6 million Iberville Veterans Memorial on Railroad Avenue in Plaquemine.
The Wall of Veterans and Wall of Active Military standing photo displays will include the photos of more than 1,700 veterans and active military personnel who have a tie to Iberville Parish. They were born here or live or work in Iberville, married a local resident, or have friends or family who live or work in Iberville.
The display will be open from 2 p.m. until dark. After the ceremony, it will remain at the site until December.
Other pre-ceremony events beginning at 3 p.m. include a helicopter fly-over, patriotic musical performances by the Iberville Math, Science and Arts Academy Orchestra and the Baton Rouge Pipe and Drums and a dance performance by Peggy Grant School of Dance.
The ceremony to honor veterans begins at 4 p.m. and will feature a keynote address by Brigadier General Joanne Sheridan, who is responsible for deployment and coordination of programs, policies and plans for more than 11,000 members of the Louisiana Army National Guard.
Sheridan deployed in Support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2008, where she served as the Director of the Project Management Office on the Task Force to Improve Business and Stability Operations in Iraq.
In addition, the ceremony will include musical performances and the ascending light show at the end of the ceremony.
The Iberville Salute to Veterans event is sponsored by Parish President J. Mitchell Ourso, Jr. and the Iberville Council. If it rains, the ceremony will be held inside the Courthouse adjacent to the memorial.
