St. Peter Baptist Church to celebrate 144th anniversary

Rev. Van Smith Jr. will celebrate St. Peter Baptist Church's 144th anniversary on Sunday.

St. Peter Baptist Church located a 58116 Court Street will celebrate 144 Years Nov. 25 at 3 p.m.

The historic Baptist church was organized in 1868 then located at what was called Irish Town, but had to relocate at that time because of the high rising waters and where now the Mississippi river flows.

Previous pastors include Rev .George Holmes, Rev. Israel Jones; Rev. Daniel Smith; Rev. Frank Williams; Rev. E. D. D. Reed;

Rev. Theodore Scott; Rev. Adam Landry and now the present pastor for the past 27 years Rev.Van Smith Jr.

The Church has stood as a beacon in the community embracing people of various backgrounds and cultures. It is a church where cultural and spiritual entities combine to create a positive atmosphere for worship.

Special guest for the Nov. 25 service will be the Rev. Geoffery Sykes of Greater St. Mary Baptist Church of Plaquemine with special music provided by the host and guest church mass choirs. A reception will follow the service. Smith invites the public to attend.
