Eagles defeat CLA; key FB matchups set for tonight

The St. John Eagles ended a dry spell of victories Thursday night with a 42-6 win over Christian Life Academy in District 8-1A action at Andrew Canova Stadium.

The SJHS win kicked off a weekend of key matchups on the local high school football scene. Tonight, Plaquemine hosts Port Allen in a pivotal 8-3A contest at Andrew Canova Stadium, while White Castle heads down La. 1 to face 8-1A foe Ascension Catholic in Donaldsonville. East Iberville heads to Edgard to meet West St. John in 8-1A fare.

In Thursday’s game, DaVante rushed 227 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns to spark the Eagles to victory. He scored on runs of 38 and 43 yards.

Kaleb Campesi also scored for SJHS, while quarterback Colby Landry connected with Corey Kimble for a 9-yard TD run.

The Eagles improved to 3-4 and 1-1 in district.

In Friday’s games, Port Allen heads to Plaquemine after a 36-17 win in the district opener against Livonia. Plaquemine lost 34-32 Friday at Washington-Marion in Lake Charles. Elsewhere in District 8-3A, St. James hosts Livonia in district action and Brusly travels to South Terrebonne for a non-league contest.

In 8-1A, White Castle (3-3) meets Ascension Catholic after a 49-24 win last week over St. John, while ACHS toppled East Iberville 34-16 last week in St. Gabriel . West St. John defeated Christian Life 55-14.
