Two people were killed in a deadly collision in St. Gabriel on Dec. 18 when Gonzales Police conducted a high-speed pursuit of shoplifting suspects from the Tanger Factory Outlet Mall.

ST. GABRIEL - St. Gabriel Police Chief Kevin Ambeau says a police pursuit began when two people were caught stealing from Tanger Outlet Mall in Ascension Parish on the morning of Dec. 18.

"Gonzales police called for assistance," Ambeau said. "They had shoplifting going on at the Tanger Mall and one of the officers was in pursuit of it. They crossed over into Iberville Parish where my officers were called and the car went head on with another vehicle before they could get there."

Louisiana State Police say a man and a woman were suspected of shoplifting from several stores in Tanger Factory Outlet Mall. Officials say an officer pulled over their PT Cruiser, but the suspects took off down La. 30 at a high rate of speed.

Yancie Green said she witnessed the PT Cruiser speeding down the highway.

"They almost hit a couple cars by the light by the Exxon and we kept going but my boyfriend kept saying he knew something was going to happen because that car was going too fast and that car was right behind it," Green said. "It was going about 90. You could tell they were running."

According to reports, police officers chased the PT Cruiser with the two suspects into Iberville Parish where the PT Cruiser crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of La. 30 and La. 74. The crash happened just before 11:30 a.m.

The woman, Kevdrinka Williams, 25, of Baton Rouge and the man, Tremaine Wickem, 20, of New Orleans both died as a result of their injuries from the crash. Neither was wearing a seatbelt.

"It's sad on both ends, for them to be out doing something like that and tragically lose their life afterward," Ambeau said.

LSP says the two men in the truck that was hit have non life-threatening injuries.

No police units were involved in the crash.
