Chamber banquet set for Jan. 17

PLAQUEMINE - Former Gov. Edwin W. Edwards is scheduled to deliver the keynote address and hold a book signing at the Iberville Chamber of Commerce's annual membership banquet on Jan. 17.

The event will be held at the Nottoway Plantation Resort in White Castle. Drinks will be served starting at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will follow at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $50 apiece for chamber members and their guests and $75 each for all non-members.

Reservations are required and must be paid in advance. Please mail reservation and check by Jan. 11 payable to the Iberville Chamber of Commerce, 23675 Church Street, Plaquemine, La. 70764.

Menu includes Nottoway salad with almond brittle, grape tomatoes, English cucumber, sugar cane vinaigrette, blackened chicken breast with beurre blanc sauce, Grouper topped with shrimp and crabmeat, cajun tasso, duchess potatoes, baby spring vegetables, bourbon chocolate pecan pie and iced tea and coffee served with the meal.

Edwards served as the Governor of Louisiana for four terms, twice as many elected terms as any other Louisiana chief executive has thus far served. He was also Louisiana's first Roman Catholic governor in the 20th century.

A colorful, powerful and legendary figure in Louisiana politics, Edwards was long dogged by charges of corruption. In 2001, he was sentenced to ten years in prison on racketeering charges and released from federal prison into a halfway house on Jan. 13, 2011.

Edwards will be available for book signings before and after the banquet.
