The final day to apply for the lottery entrance for new students at the Math, Science, and Arts Academy -West and East schools in Iberville Parish is Monday, Jan. 21, 2013.

A lottery will be held on Feb. 5, 2013.

Applications were mailed in December to all Iberville Parish residents. Students interested in applying may also get an application form from the offices at both schools.

The MSA curriculum offers innovative science, technology, and performing and visual arts. Once admitted, the programs require that students maintain a 2.5 grade point average. There is also a strict discipline policy.

Students are selected based on a lottery system, which is scheduled on Feb. 5, 2013 at 6 p.m. at the Optional Education Center auditorium in Plaquemine.

“We encourage anyone interested in attending to apply or re-apply for admission by the end of the school day on Monday, January 21, 2013," said Iberville Parish School System Chief Academic Officer Elvis Cavalier.

The students who complete an application, and meet the minimum requirements, will be selected in an open meeting using a computerized web based program that generates random numbers.

The computer program will rank the students randomly by grade and will send back within seconds a listing of the students chosen.

Each student is assigned a number upon initial registration and the numbers will be called aloud to identify the students chosen in the order ranked by the computer.

The students selected, by grade level, are identified on wall boards, and those on the waiting list will be identified by number. Students on the waiting list will be ranked and students will be able to determine where they will be on a waiting list by a personalized correspondence from the Iberville Parish school system.

The West Academy is located on the E.J. Gay site in Plaquemine, and the MSA East is located in a new school facility in St. Gabriel adjacent to the St. Gabriel Community Center.
