St. John among schools in voucher program

Staff report

St. John of Plaquemine is one of 134 Louisiana schools approved to take voucher students for the 2013-14 school year through the Louisiana Scholarship Program.

For the current school year, the Department of Education approved 118 schools to take voucher students. More than 10,000 students statewide applied for the program last year, with almost 5,000 accommodated.

"That means we disappointed half of those parents," said State Superintendent John White. "To better meet the needs of our families, we need to improve all schools and expand alternatives, such as the Scholarship Program."

The application for students was released Wednesday by the Department of Education and must be completed by March 15. Applications are available at participating schools and online at www.louisianabelieves.com/schools/louisiana-scholarship-program.

Through the program, students are able to attend private or parochial schools with taxpayer-financed tuition. Students can also attend participating high-performing public schools through the Louisiana Scholarship Program.
