On board: OLOL, Axiall partner for free health fair in Plaquemine
BATON ROUGE - Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and Axiall presented a free health fair with health screenings and education to the community on Saturday morning at the Carl F. Grant Civic Center.
"We are so happy to partner each year with Axiall here in Plaquemine to offer a free health fair for the community," OLOL public relations specialist Kelly Zimmerman said. "We have a great crowd here today. We were expecting between 300-500 people and are offering free screening to each and every one to help the community get on board for better health."
It marked the second year OLOL and Axiall partnered to bring a health fair to Plaquemine.
"In working with Axiall, we found there was a need in the community for access to healthcare and screenings such as these," Zimmerman said. "It is a great event for the community and we hope to continue because this is a great resource for healthcare."
Free screenings included blood pressure, body mass index, glucose, stroke risk assessment, colorectal cancer, cholesterol, vision, heart rhythm screening and skin cancer.
"This health fair is a one-stop to get on board for better health," said OLOL director of business development Jill Wyble said.
In addition to free screenings, the Plaquemine Health Fair included major prize giveaways, free t-shirts for the first 500 participants and activities for children.
"We have a lot of activities here for kids today," Zimmerman said. "We encourage folks to come out and bring their families."
Axiall's name is based on the word axial meaning relating to, characterized by, or forming an axis. The double ll symbolizes the two organizations that are being blended to form Axiall, Georgia Gulf and PPG's commodity chemicals business.
"At Axiall we are in the business of building a better community by being a leader in sustainable practices, being a responsible environment steward and supporting progress," Axiall vice president Charlie Freeburgh said. "We understand healthcare is important and we share a goal with Our Lady of the Lake to build a healthier community, so we are pleased to partner with the hospital to offer more than $1,200 of free health screenings."
Our Lady of the Lake currently has an Internal Medicine Clinic in Plaquemine staffed by Dr. Gerard Falgoust and Dr. Michael Green.
