BATON ROUGE - Louisiana Citizens, the state-run agency that provides homeowners insurance to thousands of Louisiana residents, is encouraging policyholders to follow some easy steps to better prepare for hurricane season.

“Policyholders should not wait until the hectic hours before an evacuation to find their insurance policy,” said Quin Netzel, Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance chief claims officer.

Louisiana Citizens has added the hotline 1-877-815-5005 and will work with a new catastrophe response firm that has the ability to handle more than 50,000 damage claims quickly after a storm, Netzel said. The agency also will use new computer software to track insurance adjusters' work in real-time.

He said policyholders can help themselves and the agency by following these tips:

- Review your policy to ensure that you have the right type and amount of coverage. Call your agent if you need to make adjustments.

- Get flood insurance. Flooding is not covered by standard homeowner insurance policies. You can get flood insurance through your agent or directly from the FEMA-run National Flood Insurance Program. For information, call 1-888-379-9531 or visit www.floodsmart.gov.

- Store Citizens' toll-free claims number, 1-877-815-5005, in your cell phone contacts so you can file a claim immediately.
