Father and son canoe team Rick Waldo, 58 and Dale Waldo, 21 from White Lake, Michigan visited the Plaquemine Lock State Historic Site recently during a summer canoeing trip down the Mississippi River looking for drinking water, according to Park Manager Stan Richardson. Their trip started at the headwaters of the Mississippi River at Lake Itasca in Minnesota on May 20 and they hope to make it to the Gulf of Mexico in the next three weeks. They are the first paddlers the site has had this year, according to Richardson. Paddlers usually pay a visit every year around this time, he said. The team said they were doing it because they just wanted to. Rick Waldo went to the University of Michigan and Dale Waldo is a current student at Michigan State.
