DUPLESSIS – A St. Gabriel man was killed early Saturday when his SUV veered off an Ascension Parish road and crashed into a culvert, State Police said.

Ryan A. Mallory, 26, St. Gabriel, died about 4:30 a.m. Saturday after the single-vehicle accident, Trooper First Class Jared Sandifer said.

Troopers began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on La. 621 west of U.S. Hwy 61 in Ascension Parish.

The 1998 Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound when for an unknown reason, it left the road to the right and veered into a ditch and culvert.

Mallory was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Gonzales where he later died.

Driver impairment is unknown but State Police have submitted a toxicology sample to its Crime Lab for analysis.

Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up.

Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained.
