Southern University announces union with White Castle High School

WHITE CASTLE - The Iberville Parish School Board recently agreed to fund a partnership with Southern University and White Castle High School.

The partnership was introduced to parents and students at the beginning of the school year orientation. 

The purpose of the partnership is to enhance a college readiness program at the school.

It will include, but is not limited to the following: teaming of College of Education candidates with teachers; professional development for teachers; workshops for students taking ACT and their parents; tutoring for students taking ACT, PLAN, Explore; mentor programs for juniors and seniors; Family Math and Science Nights at WCHS; motivational speakers and programs; a motivational pep rally with some of the Southern University Human Juke Box band members at WCHS; a Southern University Night at the WCHS Sept. 20 home game which will honor SU Alumni and WCHS night at a Southern University Home Football game for the school's 9-12th graders. 

The partnership derived from a proposal entitled “The Southern University Project” dedicated to deceased school board member Albertha Hasten.

The proposal was prepared by Gail Edwards, Dean of Students and Academic Affairs at White Castle High School and Southern University Liaison, Charley Handy, principal, Dr. Luria Young, Dean of the College of Education, Southern University, Baton Rouge Campus and Dr. Joseph Meyinssee - Chairman of the Math and Science Education Doctoral Program, Southern University, Baton Rouge Campus.
