Donna Carville, media liaison for the Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge spoke with Sr. Cecile Poitras, senior services coordinator at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church this spring about returning palms from the previous year before Ash Wednesday.

Poitras said, in her Boston accent, “No problem! Bury them.”  “What do your mean, ‘bury them’?” Carville asked.

“Bury them in your garden,” Poitras said. “They'll help things grow.”

Carville’s grandsons Jonathan, Luke and Jacob Berthelot buried the palm crosses in a flowerbed and the zinnias have never been this full or this tall.
