PLAQUEMINE - One hundred and thirty two members of the Class of 2017 at Plaquemine Senior High School (PSHS) gathered on Sept. 9 to "Pledge to Graduate."

Principal Chandler Smith, led freshmen through the "Believe in You Graduation Program" focused on helping schools improve overall scores, attendance, morale and graduation rates. The program was developed and sponsored by Herff Jones, Inc.

Smith stressed that graduating from high school on time as a class is important to each student, as well as the entire community. He shared ideas to maintain a positive attitude and stay motivated in school, and is excited to promote such an outstanding program.

"Less than 71 percent of students across the country will graduate. That number decreases to less than 53 percent for students from one of the nation's 50 largest cities," shared Herff Jones' representative and former teacher Bobby Spears, who also reviewed risks that high school drop outs face, such as significantly lower wages and less desirable job opportunities.

After the presentation, students were asked to signify their dedication to getting their diplomas on time alongside their classmates, As a class, all of the freshmen were asked to sign the Class of 2017 'Believe in You Graduation' banner which will be on display at the school.
