WCHS, Southern University celebrate academic partnership

WCHS Principal Charley Handy presented initiative leaders with a t-shirt signifying the new partnership entitled "Jaguar Nation, Bulldog Education: Together Make a Winning Combination." Leaders recognized from Southern University (left to right ) were Dr. Luria Young, Dean of Southern University's College of Education; Dr. Joseph Meyinsee, Chairman of the Math and Science Education Doctoral Program; Handy; Gail Edwards, WCHS Dean of Students and Academic Affairs and liaison to Southern University; Dr. P. Edward Cancienne, Jr., Superintendent of Iberville Parish Schools; and Dr. Verjanis Peoples, Southern University Vice Chancellor, who spoke at the event. Several Southern University alumni from the faculty, staff, central office and community were recognized.

WHITE CASTLE - White Castle High School (WCHS) and Southern University celebrated their academic college readiness academic partnership on Friday in White Castle.

The program opened with the National Anthem played by the Southern University "Human Jukebox" Marching Band, under the direction of Lawrence Jackson.

WCHS student president Jacory Jones led the pledge and recognized White Castle High School cheerleaders and football team.

The band serenaded the student body and guests while the school's dance team, football players, student body and faculty members displayed spirit in the stands and the auditorium's floor.

The college readiness initiative was inspired by late school board member, Albertha Hasten. Members of the Hasten family were on hand for the celebration.
